Frequently Asked Questions
A. Yes, ingredients are always listed on each label that accompanies the product. Q. Will the scent stay in the soap or does it go away after a few uses? A. The scent is distributed throughout the soap when it is made, the scent should always be in your soap. If the soap gets extremely hot or cold for a long time some of the scent on the outside can be lost. Then over 6 to 8 months, your scent will change. It will become lighter, or certain notes will start to fade. There is no hard and fast rule for this however, just like us, each soap is individual Q. Can I get soap from you as soon as it has dried? A. Soap does take time to cure after it gets cut. Generally, anywhere from 4 – 8 weeks for our “Better than Grandma’s” soap, and about one week for the other soaps and products. As you can see, this is not a last minute gift idea if you want something special for that special person. Q. Is there really lye in soap? A. Yes, at some time in the life of soap – bar or liquid – it will have had some lye in it. But don’t worry it will not burn your skin if you use it. When making soap you have to use an alkali, and lye is used. When properly made, finished soap contains no lye, only soap and glycerin. After soap is properly cured, there technically is no lye remaining. The chemical process called "saponification" occurs when an acid (vegetable fats and oils) meets a base (sodium hydroxide). They react with each other to form soap. Q. Why is Cosmic Potions soap better than what you purchase at the grocery store? A. The biggest difference is the glycerin content. Soap naturally has glycerin and I will many times will even add more to the mix. The commercial soap makers will remove most or all of the glycerin so it can be used in other products. Most commercial soap is not really soap at all. Actually, it is a detergent bar that can be harsh and drying. Q. Homemade soaps don’t last as long as store bought soaps do they? A. Usually homemade soaps last a little longer than commercial soaps, provided you keep it in a well drained soap dish. Q. How much essential oil or fragrance oil do you use in your products? A. Generally .5 - .7 oz per pound, give or take in products used for the skin. If it is for household use sometimes I will double that just so you can get a product with a good scent. Q.
