Who is Cosmic Potions?

When I was growing up, there was a soap store in a nearby city. It was run by one lady and she sold anything soap- from 50 pound boxes of commercial laundry soap to homemade soaps, including oatmeal soap. Homemade oatmeal soap, that did it, this was the greatest thing ever made to me at the time.

I grew up and moved away and when I came back the store was still there, but not the lady or her homemade oatmeal soaps. That soap store still intrigued me after all those years. Because of this, I decided to try my hand at soap making. I never knew how much was involved, but I love learning and this is a constant learning experience. My first soaps were of course oatmeal.

Like so many other soapers, you enjoy doing your craft so much, you just keep making it. You have to start giving it away, so you have room to make more; then people ask you to make something for them and they will pay you. Wow, how good can it get… getting to do something you enjoy and getting paid for it! AND hearing how happy the people using your soaps are when they use them.

As you can tell, soap making is my passion that comes from this hobby; Cosmic Potions became my home-based hobby.

In creating my potions, I think of the person that will be using them, even if I don’t know you at the time. I am very serious about what is made and how it is made. I do not create mass quantities of soaps or any of my other products. They are made for YOU, with the scent, or without the scent, that you would like. All items are hand crafted so that each one is a unique item and is special, for you to use or give as a gift. No two bars of soap are exactly alike, even if I make them at the same time.

"Cosmic Potions is wonderful. Not only does she have soap but she has it in all shapes, sizes, colors, fragrances, and types. I bought several oatmeal bars for my sister for Christmas. It has REAL oatmeal in it which gives it a slight "scratchy" feeling. It works great as a defoliant and just a nice all around soap. I even purchased one that was a heavy duty oatmeal bar for household use. It cleans dirty, greasy, hands but will also be great when our hands are in the garden soil. Thank you for being an excellent example of a true crafter."

About Our Scents

When purchasing products from Cosmic Potions you have the opportunity to have any scent I have mixed in almost any product (some products cannot accept any further scenting). Below is a list and description of our current scents.

Bermuda Triangle:
A fragrance you will get lost in! An excellent blend of cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon; with citrus top notes of mandarin, tangerine, grapefruit and lime; with just a hint of juicy McIntosh apples.

Black Cherry Bomb:
This black cherry will literally burn your nose hairs out… it's so strong! A delightful cherry aroma that is not too sickening sweet.

Black Orchid:
This sexy, sensual floral will have you hearing the heavy beat of jungle drums. As elegant as the mythical Black Orchid, this 'come-hither' delight will invoke dreams of tempestuous romance in a rain forest hideaway. Fresh floral top notes of lily-of-the-valley and jasmine meld into a symphony of flowers at the heart of the scent. A colorful bouquet of middle notes, with fragrant rose, orchid, carnation, narcissus, lilac and exquisite gardenia. Underpinned at the base with a rich complexity of violet, patchouli, soft powder, woods and gentle, lingering musk.

Butterfly Kisses:
A Sensuous blend of sweet, ripe, wild strawberries accented with creamy vanilla and sensual Musk. Imagine yourself in a field of ripe strawberries with a butterfly gently kissing your cheek!

Christmas Memories:
If you like cinnamon, you will love this one. Cinnamon with a touch of clove, as well as notes of coriander, black pepper, nutmeg and maybe just a teeny bit of a soft vanilla. There might be a bit of chocolate in it, too... at least to my nose. What I like most is there's no dry down of musk – it ends as it starts, a delightful spicy note.

Citrus Basil:
Fresh tangy citrus blended with a snap of basil. Very Energizing! A Bath & Body Works Duplicate scent. Very popular!

Dragon’s Blood:
This intriguing fragrance is designed for the 'Lady (or Gentleman!) of Mystery'. Underscored with woody notes of patchouli and the strength of cedarwood, the top notes of classic juicy-sweet orange meld with jasmine, rose and carnation; rounded out with a fleeting whisper of licorice. Burnished with base notes of cedarwood, patchouli and powder, this heady fragrance will turn your everyday body care products into a sensual experience! An ancient scent used for love, protection and to exorcise negative energies.

Eucalyptus:
Eucalyptus has a very herbaceous scent. It also has soft wood undertones.

Ginger:
Wonderful fresh ginger aroma. True ginger oil has an earthy-woody quality to it that has nothing to do with candied ginger from the market. That's a whole different process. Ginger oil smells warmly, and is warming to the touch. It is spicy, but I would not call it sweet.

Jasmine Sambac:
The mystery and allure of Jasmine has been a part of our lives since the dawn of perfumery. If you’ve been looking for an alternative to the expensive absolute, here’s the solution. This scent is purely Jasmine – sensual, delicate and full-bodied without being cloying and overly sweet, as some FO’s are.

Lavender:
A bold yet fresh smelling Lavender

Lime:
This Lime fragrance oil should come in a plain brown wrapper. It is the grown up version. There is no usual life saver scent or chemical smell to this one. It smells just like the fine oils that fly into the air when you twist a lime peel. Real punch and clarity

Lime Peppercorn:
This blend is the perfect match! A FANTASTIC grown-up lime.

Mayan Gold:
An exotic jasmine Oriental blend with highlights of grapefruit, mandarin, and lemon, combined with sensual East Indian patchouli and cedar wood, vanilla bean and warm amber musks. This sensuous, rich fragrance is sure to become a favorite!

Oatmeal, Milk & Honey:
Truly the scent of home. Not a bakery type scent with overwhelming sweetness, but the earth scent of oatmeal, the balance of rich milk and a touch of sweet honey. Gives the feeling of luxury, without decadence.

Ocean Mist:
Complex bouquet of carnations, lily of the valley, and hyacinth; underlined by oakmoss and white musk.

Orange:
Orange is cheerful, refreshing, uplifting, and comforting. Like all citrus fruits, orange oils play a major role in Chinese medicines.

Patchouli:
The scent is earthy and deep.

Peppermint:
This is an herbaceous, sweet smelling peppermint. We think it smells like wet peppermint leaves and almost has a hay-like undertone.

Sage & Citrus:
A spa-inspired mix of sparkling citrus and cleansing herbs. Very Revitalizing! A Yankee Candle duplication.

Sage Leaf:
A wonderful fragrance reminiscent of fresh herbal sage leaves.

Sandalwood:
A woody bouquet of cedar and sandalwood with rose and jasmine.

Bamboo & Teak:
An exotic woody, citrus type with a bergamot, lemon and litsea top-note, a floral rosewood and sage middle-note, with a musky sandalwood and teak base-note.

Stress Relief:
Type: A soothing blend of Lavender and Sage with a hint of Peppermint and Star Anise. This is a very clean scent and a sure hit with women and men alike! A Bath and Body Works duplication.

Sweet Grass:
The ozony aroma of fresh cut grass, clover, with a hint of wisteria

Tahitian Vanille:
Lush and tropical, our Tahitian Vanille effuses warmth and comfort. The buttery heart note combines exquisitely with the sweet vanilla top note and sensually, earthy sandalwood bottom. Sophisticated, but fun, we've become addicted to this new vanilla.

Tea Tree:
Tee Tree essential oil has a fresh, Antiseptic and medicinal scent. It also has characteristic mint and spice back-notes.

Tranquil Sleep:
A Bath & Body Works duplicate scent. A warm sweet floral blend with jasmine, lily, lavender and violet and a background of smooth woody and musk notes.

True Antique Lilac:
This is a TRUE Lilac and doesn’t have that yucky powdery smell. Wonderful sticking power! The perfect spring scent that sells well all year long. A huge customer favorite and the one you’ve been looking for!

Whispering Pine:
Close your eyes and take a deep breath, while imagining top notes of cool mountain greenery and crisp airiness, which give way to an intricate coniferous blend of Siberian Fir and Blue Spruce. Let yourself be swept away on this clean, woodsy aroma to the crest of a rain-washed Whispering Pine forest. Our customers tell us their male clients love this scent. A definite masculine favorite (and VERY popular with women who adore it on their men!).

White Tea & Ginger:
A nurturing fragrance with the fresh aroma of herbal white tea leaves is enhanced by lemongrass and soft floral combined with a touch of fresh ginger root and a woody/musk base.

Witches Brew:
A secret blend that is mystical.

Note: If you are…
Under 4 years old: You should stay away from ANY fragrance and most essential oil scents. Use only mild, diluted scents. Lavender and Roman Chamomile can be used IF you have checked for sensitivity. It is best to work with someone who knows Aromatherapy very well.
Pregnant: Stay away from ALL essential oils, no matter what sort, must be diluted more so if used while pregnant. You can pass the chemicals and the essential oils to the baby. Then there is always a chance the baby could be born chemical sensitive or with allergies. These essential oils may be used, diluted, and NOT during the first 4 months of pregnancy: Rosemary, Rose, and Peppermint. Check all your household cleaners, cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, everything for essential oils. Any questions contact a good aroma therapist.

Oil Properties

You read the labels of food you purchase because it is important. What you put on your skin is important also, and you should read the labels of those items. Below are the properties of oils we use in our products.

Almond Oil:
Almond Oil is an excellent emollient (softening and soothing to the skin) and also helps the skin to balance its loss and absorption of moisture. This oil is one of the most popular of the carrier oils used in aromatherapy and massage, since it is non:greasy, spreads easily and is also great for nourishing the skin. The aroma is light, slightly sweet and nutty. Extracted from almonds, sweet almond oil is pale yellow in color.
Compared with other oils, sweet almond oil is reasonably priced. It usually does not irritate skin. People with nut allergies should not use almond oil.

Castor Oil: Castor Oil has been used therapeutically in ancient India, China, Persia, Egypt, Africa, Greece, Rome, the Americas, and in 17th century Europe. This oil is also known as Palma Christi or the "Palm of Christ". Cold pressed Castor oil has been used or time-tested for centuries throughout the world for its anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties long before any government agency was created to regulate medicines. Medicinal Castor Oil was used for skin problems, burns, sunburns, skin disorders, skin cuts, abrasions, etc. The oil is also used as a rub or pack for various ailments, including abdominal complaints, headaches, muscle pains, inflammatory conditions, skin eruptions, lesions, and sinusitis. A Castor oil pack is made by soaking a piece of flannel in Castor oil, then putting it on the area of complaint and placing a heat source, such as a hot water bottle, on top of it.

Coconut Oil:
This is a very good carrier oil for dry skin and will not clog pores. Coconut oil is a gift to the soapmaking industry because of it's resistance to rancidity and contribution to a good, hard soap with a wonderful fluffy lather.

Emu Oil:
Emu Oil is rapidly gaining recognition as an invaluable cosmetic ingredient due to very positive results in current studies. It has an extraordinary ability to penetrate the skin, is non-comedogenic and non-irritating. It has been found to reduce inflammation and redness of the skin, reduce the formation of wrinkles and restore moisture to irritated, dry skin. In short, emu oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, encourages healing, stimulates skin, hair and nail growth, has a natural SPF and is a natural emollient and moisturizer. A great oil for skin use on all skin types.

Grapeseed Oil:
Is rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid quite important for the skin and the cell membranes. It is purported to have regenerative and restructuring qualities and has great skin moisturizing properties.

Grapeseed oil is a great non-greasy oil to use, but could be enriched by blending it with another carrier, such as almond or wheat germ. This is fine textured, oil with a very light, slightly sweet hint of a nutty aroma, and with a satiny finish. It contains vitamins, minerals, and protein, GLA, and a small amount of vitamin E.

However, most grapeseed oil is extracted from grape seeds using a solvent (rather than being pressed from the seeds), which some aromatherapists say make it an inferior oil for aromatherapy massage.

Jojoba Oil:
Closely resembles oil of your own skin; it is an excellent moisturizer and is ideal for all skin types. It can in most cases be used on blemished skin without any problems, as it helps to control acne. Jojoba is a good option for most people prone to bad acne because it is thought to have antibacterial properties and contains long chain wax esters that closely resemble skin sebum.

Jojoba is also a favorite oil to use as a carrier oil for aromatherapy as it penetrates the skin easily and is suitable for all skin types. The aroma is light to medium, not as sweet as the nut oils. Jojoba is actually a wax extracted from the seed of the jojoba plant. Jojoba has a very long shelf life, so it's a good choice if you don't use it regularly.

Jojoba is usually not irritating to skin. One drawback: jojoba oil is so silky and quickly absorbed, you may need to reapply it often or mix it with other oils listed here. It is pricier than sweet almond oil.

Olive Oil:
Olive oil attracts external moisture to the skin (humectant) and still allows normal functions of the skin to take place.

Palm Kernal Oil:
Palm Kernal Oil is very similar to coconut oil in that it has a high percentage of lauric acid which allows it to produce a hard soap that lathers well. It lends a smooth texture to soap.

Rice Bran Oil:
Rice Bran Oil is obtained in the milling process, is the part of the rice that is richest in fat. This natural oil, which is expeller pressed, has the presence of natural antioxidants which makes it an excellent ingredient for food grade products.

Rice Bran is full of antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, ferulic acid, linolic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and oryzanol. The oil acts as both a carrier and emollient and is available in several forms: extract, oil and wax.

In Japan, Rice Bran Oil is used as a skin and hair beauty enhancer. It is also used throughout the world in a variety of cosmetics, especially those that treat dry, mature skin and the those dark spots.

Benefits of Rice Bran Oil: Provides moderate penetration with little greasiness; Promotes of collagen formation; Inhibits lipid peroxidation; Treats dry, mature skin; Provides smooth spreadability.
